Chrome OS or NO OS

We have lived under the shadow of Mircosoft for the last two decades so we always think of Windows as the default operating system for all personal computer, laptops etc. Barring a very select few who work in the technology alleys like Bangalore, Los Angeles, Boston etc. have tasted other operating systems. We have also got used to all the nuances which windows has taught us that it takes time for the computer to boot up, there are viruses to be managed, each application has to be started and most importantly once in a while the system can crash and reboot. Well imagine a world where your computer does not need a operating system. How would the applications run?, how would we create docs or send emails?, etc. Well that is very close to possibility with the possibility of Google Chrome Operating system. As far as a user is concerned he will not see any OS. What he/she will experience is a Google Chrome browser. So if you press the on button on your computer your browser should pop up instantly for you to surf the net.

Why is this significant? Here is what is happening:

1. The most used applications on your computer is your browser. And the reason apart form search is the fact that with whole bunch of online (Cloud, SAAS) applications you can not literally live and work online. You have to be on the net for whole bunch of things including:

A. Sending Emails (GMAILYahoo mail et.al)
B. Creating and Storing documents (Google DocsZoho)
C. Talking/Chatting with someone (SkypeGTALK)
D. Surfing the net for information (GoogleBing)
E. Social networking (TwitterLinkedin), Blogs, Social Collaboration (Injoos)

2. Cheap notebook or laptops (Also called Netbooks or ultra-portables). which are smaller, lightweight and most importantly cheap. So if you pretty much do the things I described in point 1 you don’t need to go for expensive laptops from companies like HP or Dell, rather look at Netbooks form companies like ASUS. Even Dell has now recognized this fast growing segment. Easy to carry during your travel and easy to connect wirelessly. Some of these are now being sold by telecom service provider themselves depending on the broadband plan you have chosen.

So be an informed buyer and choose your options wisely as you can significantly impact the bottom line of your company by reducing both your hardware (Netbooks) and Software (Online/Cloud Subscription based applications) expenses.
